The curriculum offered at the school assists students to learn the skills needed to live as independently as possible.
We offer an excellent range of programs across the school from the junior groups through to the Senior groups. The programs are structured so that basic skills can be applied in everyday life.
As the students progress through the school, there is a transition of focus from developing basic skills to applying them in the real. The school aims to prepare the students for all aspects of their future life. This means that we have a much more comprehensive curriculum than other schools as it takes in the domestic and community areas as well as recreational and vocational activities.
In general the school seeks to develop basic skills in: -
* Communication - speaking, listening, reading, writing (class programs, speech therapy, music)
* Number - numeracy, time, calendar, money, measurement (class programs, community based learning);
* Physical - fine and gross motor (physical education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, music);
* Social - interacting with others both in the school and in the community (class programs, community based learning);
* Emotional - learning to take control of one’s own behaviour and deal with things which happen to us every day (class programs, community based learning, social skills programs);
In the Lower and Middle part of the school you will see excellent programs designed to develop the student’s basic skills. The aims are very similar to those of mainstream schools although the students are working at an earlier developmental stage.
Throughout the senior part of the school these academic skills are taught in context eg. communication, mathematics and social skills are learned in the community where they ultimately have to be used.
