Junior school

The Junior school program caters for students in Prep to Year 2. There are currently 5 Junior classes at Western Suburbs State Special School. Our students engage with the Australian Curriculum, focusing on learning school routines and developing communication, literacy and numeracy skills and social & emotional competence. The curriculum is delivered through explicit teaching, play based activities and the use of the Curriculum to Classroom Students with Disability resources.

Developing skills in communication and literacy is essential across all learning areas and is supported by the use of a balanced literacy approach. This program ensures students have explicit modelling of reading, writing, listening and viewing to support their language development and communication with others. Teachers provide consistent modelling of language using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) such as Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) or Proloquo2Go.

The Junior school precinct is a very safe environment which meets the individual needs of children entering their first few years of schooling. Classrooms and play areas are well equipped to support their emerging and developing health, physical and social needs.
