Curriculum

At Western Suburbs State Special, we believe that every student is capable of achieving success and we are committed to do all that we can to motivate and engage all students in learning. The curriculum aims to set a foundation for lifelong learning and transitioning to further training opportunities. Our teachers use the Australian Curriculum to develop teaching and learning programs to build on students’ interests, strengths and learning needs. Students from Prep to Year 9 are taught and assessed in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, the Arts and Health and Physical Education in alignment with the Australian Curriculum.

Senior secondary students, years 10-12, are taught and assessed through the Australian Curriculum, the Guidelines for Individual Learning (GIL, QCAA, 2015), and Certificate 1 courses in Vocational Education Training (VET). These units of work are enhanced through the school’s Work Training centre.

All students from Prep to Year 10 have an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) that is developed each semester and a yearly Personal Development Plan (PDP) to support their learning. A Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan is developed for the students in Year 10, which outlines the senior phase of learning and transition to post school options.
