Schooling is compulsory in Queensland until the age of 16 and students must be learning or earning up to 17 years of age. Children must attend every day and be on time.
Parents are required to contact the school either on the day of absence (preferred) or on the day of return and provide a reason for their child's absence. This can be done by telephoning (07) 37140660. Please leave the following information:
- Child's full name.
- Class.
- Reason and duration of the absence.
Please be aware that if your child is away from school for three consecutive days or more as an unexplained absence, your child’s teacher or office staff will be in touch to ascertain the reason for the absence.
Absences can also be a written note to the class teacher or by email to: admin@westernsuburbsspecs.eq.edu.au
Parents of students who travel to school by School Transport Assistance must also inform the transport provider that their child will not be at school for the period of absence.
Late arrivals / early departures
If a child is required to leave school during the day e.g. doctor's appointment, sickness etc., a parent/carer must sign out their child from the school office, collect a pink slip, and then collect the child from the classroom.
If a child is being taken to school after the beginning of the school day, please go to the office first, to advise of their arrival.
Just a reminder to parents that if you intend to have your child away from school for any period of time 10 days or greater, then there is a departmental obligation to apply for an Exemption from School to cover this time.
